Believe it or not, the Old West is alive and well in the Los Angeles metro. The rural community of Acton is located near California´s Antelope Valley between Palmdale and Santa Clarita. Acton is a hidden gem tucked away in the hillsides near State Route 14. The community features mansions and sprawling equestrian ranches as well a historic downtown area and a film-worthy, western ambience. Indeed, Acton has been a backdrop in several movies including Little Miss Sunshine and Terminator 3. The Acton lifestyle is tranquil and scenic. Crime is virtually nonexistent, and residents are constantly rejuvenated by the crisp mountain air and gorgeous views of the valley below. Maybe this is why Acton residents are characteristically friendly and community-oriented. Youth and interest groups such as 4H are prevalent as well. Acton is home to two significant landmarks, Parker Mountain and Shambala Preserve. Public education in Acton is under the management of Acton-Agua Dulce Unified School District. Meadowlark Elementary, Agua Dulce Elementary, High Desert School and Vasquez High School serve the needs of local students. Acton is a small residential community located in the rugged Sierra Pelona Mountains. It is off the Antelope Valley Freeway (Highway 14) near Palmdale. Acton is roughly 20 miles (32 km) northeast of the San Fernando Valley and 47 miles (76 km) north of downtown Los Angeles. The town has a rural western theme which can be seen in its homes, commercial buildings, and historical buildings (some of which date back to the late 1800s).

The homes in the mountains around Acton have great views of the valley below. In the valley are ranch style homes, often with equestrian facilities. Acton is not a part of the Antelope Valley, it is grouped together with the "AV" in the General Plan. Acton has a Metrolink commuter rail station, on its border with Palmdale that is themed in an "old western" style and has been seen in various movies and commercials.

The Acton Chamber of Commerce was incorporated in 1954 and worked as the primary civic group until the formation of the Acton Town Council. Its primary function is to promote Acton and its trade areas through educational, economic, legislative, civic, social and cultural programs and affairs.
